Earth Day: How do you teach your children about the planet?

Lady C and her dad planting a few flowers
There is one thing that all people no matter what their color, heritage, native language, ancestry have in common.... it's the planet that we share. Earth Day is a celebrated each year and this year it takes place on April 22nd.

Earth Day was founded in 1970 by a U.S. Senator, Gaylord Nelson, who was inspired by the student anti-war movement and has become a global environmental movement celebrating the earth and reminding everyone about the ways we can preserve the planet.

In honor of the upcoming earth day, we want to share a few Earth Day resources

Environmental Protection Agency - suggested reading

Earth Day Activities for Kids - including crafts and coloring

More activities from Kaboose!

One of Lady C's personal favorite videos is "Being Green: Elmo Goes Green to Help the Earth" Here's a clip from the DVD!

What are some other ways to teach your children how to show the planet some love and affection?
Check out local museums, parks, botanical gardens and zoos for workshops, craft projects and parades celebrating Earth Day.
Get them involved in your spring planting. Let them enjoy the dirt and worms and bugs and being responsible for caring for plants.
Encourage them to recycle on a daily basis.

Earth Day is every day but April 22nd is a good day to start exposing children to the many easy ways they can help preserve the planet.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR CHILDREN TO HELP PRESERVE THE PLANET?
WHAT WILL YOU DO IN THE FUTURE?

  1. I make sure that the kids know not to liter because that is very harmful to the planet. I am trying to get them outside more to enjoy some planting and I think it's a good thing we can celebrate our earth.

    1. Cheers to you. It doesn't take very much to keep our children engaged but every little bit helps!

  2. We get outside and enjoy the outdoors. We hike, camp, visit local parks and preserves, etc. In the past week, we've visited a state park for a guided hike, and a local arboretum for a hike with friends. I remind them to "leave nothing but memories and take nothing but pictures..." We've always recycled and it's the kids' job to take care of it. Three of my four kiddos have a small garden to tend to. Those are just a few of the things we do to help care for our planet.
