My good friend Annamaria gifted Lady C with her first pet... a lovely little beta fish from a local pet store. When I asked Lady C what she wanted to name this beloved creature, she decided on "Nemo" - which is no surprise because loves the movie "Finding Nemo" and we've watched it
Nemo is a good fish (as far as fish go), but as most parents know, your child's first pet is YOUR pet. 100%. Lady C does a good job each day of
What can I say? I never had a pet as an adult... I'm not a "pet" person and when I was little, my mother took care of the fish we had! We once had some cats and I'm pretty sure my mother "let" it leave the house one day.
If I were to have a pet, it would be a dog but culturally my husband and I have different views of dogs. He tells me that it is quite American to have dogs in the house with you, hanging around with family and given pet insurance. He says, where he grew up, the dogs pretty much stayed outside and to themselves. Plus, we are not really interested in the whole "walking" a dog thing. So - dogs - not an option.
Anyway, we are a happy family now with Nemo in the bunch. But I know - we probably won't have any other pets... a fish is enough... so Nemo it is!
Does your family have any pets?
Are you a pet family?
Do you think people from different cultures view pets differently?

We had a dog but had to let him go because of the cost. I think a family pet is good but depending on the type of pet because some pets need more and others need nothing. Love the fish
ReplyDeleteAs much as the fish takes more work than expected it actually is quite easy.
DeleteCute! Glad to see Lady C is taking good care of her pet! We had fish once and they lasted all of a week. Cleaning the bowl was an adventure. One fish fell into the sink and flopped around for 3 seconds before we managed to get it (him?) back into the bowl. But I'm sure that our excellent technique had nothing to do with their eventual demise.
ReplyDeleteNot a pet person but if I were I'd get a cat. She'd do her thing, I'd do mine, we'd get along splendidly.
I find cats to be too much like people! I'd rather get a roommate that can split the bills lol
DeleteIce cubes? Oh wow. My frist pet was a gold fish I named Frank. He did after 2 weeks. I had several fish after that mainly b/c dogs and cats were banned from our apartment (and I'm allergic to cats anyway) but they all died quickly. I have a dog now and he's great but I'm glad I got him as an adult b/c I wouldn't have wanted to be bothered when I was younger. Good luck with Nemo! I just remembered my first Beta was named Nemo too...won't tell you what happened to him though. LOL
ReplyDeleteI sense some judgment about the ice cubes...
DeleteI love pets. We have a canary and an aquarium of brackish water, African Cichlids. I had a pet cat which Aisha loved while I was living in New York and right now my husband and I are toying with the idea of getting a dog. However, I think I may just stick with caged animals since I don't have the time to walk a dog and really show him the care he needs.
ReplyDeleteI definitely think cultures have a different perspective on pets. My Jamaican immigrant parents who had countless dogs in their homeland just couldn't understand the high maintenance of American dogs.
Hayden does not understand the high maintenance at all... it's so odd to him.
DeleteIt should be odd to everyone! It's a DOG not a human!
DeleteWhat a great first pet. We don't have a pet (unless you count the neighborhood cat who comes by every day), but we'd probably start with a fish, too, if we got a pet for my daughter.
ReplyDeleteAre you feeding the neighbor cat? If so - it's your pet!
DeleteSo many people have told me to get a pet for my boys. I don't want the responsibility! So I decided to get plants. Hey I figured if they survive maybe a goldfish will too... Btw, I'm up to 4 plants and the kids have named them. What? No walking, no pet sitters, no poo, just water! Everyone is happy. But am I depriving them?
ReplyDeleteLol - we have plants too - basil and some other herb. She's fascinated with it
