Guest Blog: How to Throw a Children’s Birthday Party With International Themes

Your child’s birthday party is an excellent opportunity for you to expose your child to celebration customs from different cultures. Kids love learning about different cultures and naturally embrace diversity, unless their parents or other adult influences have taught them to do otherwise. If you’re committed to encouraging your child to embrace diversity and learn about other cultures, a birthday party that includes international themes is a great way for your child and the party guests to learn more about all the different people who inhabit the world. Here are a few suggestions to help you plan a kids’ birthday party that incorporates international themes and celebrates customs from various cultures:

·         Make it a Potluck

On the party invitations, encourage the party guests to bring a food item that is unique to their particular heritage. Since the party guests will all have distinctive heritages and cultural backgrounds, you should get a pretty interesting mix of food at the party. Before everyone eats at the party, each of the kids can provide the rest of the party guests with a little bit of information about their dish.

·         Encourage the Kids to Dress Up

A dress up party is always fun, especially when kids are dressing up to pay homage to their unique heritages. On the party invitations, let the kids and parents know that everyone is welcome to dress up based on what their ancestors wore or based on what their family currently wears to special, cultural celebrations.

·         Include Some Games from Different Parts of the World

Kids love to play things like mancala, mah-jongg, and croquet. Plus, there are tons of other games you can find instructions for on the Internet that are popular in all the different countries of the world. Be sure to give the kids some historical information about all the games they play at the party and where those games originated. Throughout the party, let them ask questions about different foods their eating and games their playing and encourage their natural curiosity in other cultures.

·         Spend Some Time Decorating

An international themed birthday party doesn’t feel very festive without some appropriate decorations and party supplies! So, get some flags from different countries to hang up around the house and other decorative items that represent the cultural traditions of people from all over the world.

A children’s birthday party with international themes can be a whole lot of fun and educational too. Planning for a party like this requires some effort, but that effort definitely pays off!
